The best part of today was when we decided to go to Rangitoto Island. We took a ferry across the harbor to one of the 50 volcanic islands in New Zealand. Rangitoto is the most recent and largest volcanoes in New Zealand. It was formed by a series of eruptions from 6000 years ago. The latest eruption was 550 years ago, so it's all rubble now.
The top of the island/volcano is 850 feet in height and it is 5.5 km wide. Rangitoto is Maori for "Blood Sky" which seems quite fitting for one of the islands largest volcanoes. It was an amazing experience and pictures do not do it justice!6][9] |
